Surfing in Morocco for Beginners: What to Expect on Your First Surf Trip
If you’ve ever thought about trying surfing, Morocco is one of the best places in the world to start.

With warm weather, consistent waves, and a relaxed atmosphere, it attracts beginners from all over the world. But if this is your first surf trip, it’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and uncertainty.

What will it be like?
Will you be able to stand up?
What if you’ve never done anything like this before?

In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly what to expect from your first surf experience in Morocco
Why Morocco is Perfect for Beginner Surfers
Morocco has become one of the top destinations for beginner surfers — and for good reason.
The coastline offers a wide variety of beach breaks, which are ideal for learning. Unlike more advanced reef spots, these waves are softer and more forgiving.
Another advantage is consistency. You don’t have to wait days for waves — there is almost always something to surf.
Add to that:
  • warm climate all year round
  • long sandy beaches
  • experienced local instructors
…and you get one of the most beginner-friendly environments in the world.

What Your First Surf Lesson Will Look Like
If you’ve never surfed before, your first lesson will start on the beach — not in the water.

Instructors will explain the basics:
how to lie on the board, how to paddle, and how to stand up. You’ll practice the “pop-up” movement on the sand a few times before heading into the ocean.

Once you’re in the water, you won’t be alone:
In beginner-friendly surf camps, instructors stay close, help you position yourself, and even push you into your first waves so you can focus on standing up.

The goal of the first session is simple:
get comfortable in the water and experience your first ride.
Will You Be Able to Stand Up?
This is probably the most common question — and the answer is:
most beginners manage to stand up at least a few times during their first lessons.

But it’s important to understand that surfing is not something you master in a day.

Progress looks like this:
  • first, you learn to balance on the board
  • then, you start catching waves
  • and only after that comes control and technique
Some people progress faster, others take more time — and both are completely normal.

What matters most is consistency and enjoying the process.
